China, India in talks to resume direct flights after five years, Chinese envoy calls It ‘Spring’ for relations

India and China are engaged in discussions to restart direct flights between the two countries after a nearly five-year hiatus. The Chinese Consul General in Kolkata, Xu Wei, confirmed that efforts are underway to restore pre-pandemic flight routes, which were halted due to Covid-19 and border tensions.

Before the suspension, India and China had 50 direct flights per week connecting cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Kunming to New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Talks to reinstate these routes have been ongoing, with India’s Foreign Ministry first confirming the discussions in January following top diplomat Vikram Mistri’s visit to China. The ministry stated that both countries had agreed "in principle to resume direct air services."

Speaking at a press conference, Xu Wei expressed confidence that relations between the two Asian giants were improving. He noted that April 1 would mark the 75th anniversary of China-India diplomatic relations, and both countries plan to commemorate the occasion with a series of events. Describing the situation, he said, "The spring of China-India relations is arriving."

The push for resuming flights comes amid broader efforts to normalize ties, which have been strained due to border clashes in recent years. While economic engagement between the two countries remains strong, direct travel restrictions have hindered business and tourism. Chinese authorities are also hopeful that India will relax visa policies for Chinese travelers, making it easier for professionals and tourists to visit.

Trade between India and China remains significant, with Beijing emerging as one of India’s largest trade partners despite ongoing geopolitical differences. The resumption of flights is expected to boost business travel, people-to-people exchanges, and diplomatic engagements. Chinese officials believe that improved connectivity will help accelerate the momentum for stable bilateral ties.

Although an exact timeline for resuming flights has not been announced, both governments are expected to take gradual steps in restoring air travel. Xu Wei’s remarks signal a positive shift in relations, but final decisions will likely depend on broader diplomatic and security considerations from both sides.
